The Emancipation Proclamation (1863)

The Emancipation Proclamation consists of two Executive Orders by President Lincoln that together free slaves in the Confederate States of America. The Proclamation can only be enforced as Union troops advanced into Confederate territory. Although the Emancipation Proclamation does not declare slavery illegal, it does free thousands of slaves and sets the stage for future action to abolish slavery.
